How the media manipulates statistics & headlines

So this is how a lot of media contributes to fear mongering in our country.

i saw the following headline today:

“Hundreds of migrants in the US may have connections to the Venezuelan gang known as Tren de Aragua, according to the Department of Homeland Security.”

Over 2.6 million immigrants enter legally in 2020, ~11.4 million illegally in 2018… So lets say 14 million just for a number…they say 100s in the headline, but in the story it says “Roughly 100 of the 600 migrants DHS has deemed “subjects of interest” were confirmed members of the gang

So let’s say all 600 migrants were “dangerous” members of this gang even though they weren’t.

That’s .00428571429% of the immigrant population. But wait, that doesn’t sound scary, does it?

Wait a second, it’s only 100 that were members of the gang!

Oh! So that’s 0.000714285714% of the ~14 million. That’s even less scary.

See how they manipulate how they state the numbers to make it sound larger than it is and make them sound scary. They had 600 subjects of interest and only 100 of them were in the gang, but the headline will say “HUNDREDS”. And even 100 sounds like a ton of people until you factor it out.

It’s more likely you know a murderer as that’s 3 people out of every 328,000.
